Introduction and Facts about Sabah

Entry 1:

There are many places that you should know about Sabah. From the cultural until the Traditional Food. So, for those who are still not know about Sabah, there you go..
So for the background facts about Sabah we start with Mount Kinabalu. Everyone knows about Mount Kinabalu right? so let's check it out..

Gunung Kinabalau (Mount Kinabalu) is big. Standing at 4095 meters (13, 435 feet) it is easily the highest mountain in Malaysia. Mt Kinabalu is often wrongly quoted as the tallest in south-east Asia but actually it is only the 10th highest, beaten by 6 little known peaks in the Kachin province of Burma and a further 3 peaks in West Papua, Indonesia.
Climbing experts rate Gunung Kinabalu as one of the easiest big mountains you are likely to climb but don’t go thinking it is a piece of cake – they are comparing it to the likes of Everest or Matterhorn. Climbing Mt Kinabalu was really hard for me.
Usually the trail starts at Timpohon Gate (there is another route, the Mesilau route which is longer, harder and less popular) the starting point is already at 1866m above sea level and since the route is pretty much straight uphill all the way the actual height climbed is (only) 2229m. the distance travelled is around 8.7km each way.

This is on the top of Mount Kinabalu. However there are some rules that you should follow when you reach at the top of the mountain!!

Let's hear song live from Kundasang..

There is no need for any specialist mountaineering equipment - all that is required to reach the summit of Gunung Kinabalu is reasonable level of fitness and a dogged, determined mental attitude.
Gunung Kinabalu is situated in Kinabalu National Park, 88km (2-3hours drive) from Kota Kinabalu, the state capital of Sabah, Malaysia on the island of Borneo. Kinabalu National Park covers an area of 754 sq. km. and contains thousands of species of plants, orchids, butterflies and birds. The park is very wel managed and, as a UNESCO World heritage site, it is a credit to Malaysia. Kinabalu Park is well geared up handle the large numbers of climbers who ascend Gunung Kinabalu every day.

Traditional Food and Cultural At Sabah

Entry 11:

So this is Buras and Ayam Masak Lengkuas, The taste is so yummy!!

This is AMPLANG (bebola ikan)

Amplang is the most famous dried food in Tawau. It has two flavors that made from fish and prawn. The price is depends on the size of the Amplang. If you want to try, you can buy for RM5.00 only per package. People usually tend to buy this Amplang because the taste is so good. You can enjoy your snack while you are in flight, vacation or even in event. Students that study far away from their hometown normally buy Amplang for their late snack because this snack can make you full. In the other words it can be categorize in healthy food because there are no including artifical colors. So, if you are in Tawau, this is the famous dried food that you need to buy as a souvenir . I bet, the taste is so good for you, friends or even your family.

Okay Moved to Traditional Food of Kadazandusun which is Butod (Ulat Sagu)

Butod (Ulat Bulu) Goreng

Butod is come from Ulat Sagu which is Makanan orang Kadazandusun. Butod is usually eat with vegetables or else you can eat them freshly from trees, where the Butod (Ulat Sagu) lived. Butod is traditional food for people in Ranau, Tamparuli, Kundasang, Tambunan and many more. Normally non-muslim will eat them and sell the Butod at market. So please beware of these foods when you come to the market that near Kundasang. The name of the Ulat Sagu will trick you since you don’t know the other name of Ulat Sagu. Before you buy, you should ask first. It is because the minority of people lived in that area are Non-Muslim.

Entry 14:

Okay Let's move to the other beliefs and culture at Sabah which is "AKI NABALU"

Aki Nabalu means “the revered place of the dead”. But some of Dusun’s description of grandma – a mother widowed at a young age – told a young me as she looked longingly towards the mountain.
Aki Nabalu is a named of Dusun’s people. The Dusuns are the ancestral guardians of the mountain, and part of how we still uphold that role, even in this time of modernity, is to observe the practices that our ancestors have put in place order to safeguard Aki’s sancity.

This is the beliefs of Kadazandusun if their did not follow the rules when they climbing. This is based on true story.

In this mountain, there are many rules that you are not allowed to do. For example, do not make the things that can make Aki’s angry, do not take anything up in the mountain and please respect the mountain as well as you in the top. Respect her for what she represents, and what she means to those who lives, histories and identities are so closely bound to hers. We are Sabahan believe that the cultural and spiritual. The ears of the Mount Kinabalu, that is represent Aki’s Nabalu.

The other well known memorials are the Sandakan Memorial Park and Labuan World War 2 Cemetery and Memorial. This park was built to remember the death of British, Australian and New Zealand soldiers and other Borneo civilians during the horrific Sandakan Death marches from Sandakan to Ranau in 1945 when North Borneo was under the occupation of the Japanese Imperial army.

Kundasang War Memorial Park was built by New Zealand in 1962 and resembles a fortress on the hill. However, it was held in abeyance until 2005. In 2005, restoration work was restarted. Inside the fort, there are three adjoining garden plant that made art with the theme of the three countries that were different to remember their heroes she lived or died during the tragic "Sandakan Death March". The gardens are named Australia Park, the English Garden and the Garden of Borneo. In Australia Park ferns and grass turf will welcome visitors. Entry 7:

Moved to Sandakan Places which is AGNES KEITH HOUSE!!!!

Who was Agnes?

Agnes Newton Keith was born on July, 4 1901. She was an American author best known for her three autobiographical accounts of life in North Borneo. Now she was in Borneo, Sabah, before during and after the Second World War. The second of these, Three Came Home, tells of her time in Japanese POW and civilian internee camps in North Borneo and Sarawak, and was made into a film of the same name in 1950. She published many books.

In 1934, she married Henry G. Keith, known as “Harry Keith”, an Englishman. His husband had been a friend of her brother, named Al when both boys had been at the same school in San Diego, and Agnes had first time met when she was eight years old. He had gone on to work for the government of North Borneo, and she had not seen him in a decade when he visited California while on leave in 1934. However, as soon as they re-met they decided to get married, and were wed three days later. Three months after their marriage, following an operation to cure Agnes’s eyesight, they sailed for Borneo.

In April 1940, her son was born, named Henry George Newton Keith, their daughter Jean is mentioned, though not by name, in Keith’s first book, “Land Below the Wind”, on page 174 of the first edition, dated 1939. A picture stood on the table by us of our little girl at home in her party dress. “On page 171, while discussing small-boy Usit with Harry, she says, “Im afraid I’m too lazy to take on the job of being a parent again. “Copies of White Man Returns are dedicated “To my children George and Jean”. Jean was invited to the celebrations for the reissue of Land Below the Wind in Sabah on July 6, 2007.

The Newlands, The Keith’s house on the hill above Sandakan was the first building the British rebuilt after war. The original was destroyed completely by the Japanese.

The Agnes Keith house was fully furnished and simply with reproduction of colonial furniture and genuine antiques. A gallery on first floor tells the story of this remarkable woman, on her books and family. Hmm. It is very interesting story about Agnes’s family.

This is the first floor inside the Agnes’s House / museum. The house is very clean and you can see many books that has been wrote by Agnes itself. For those who are love to read book, I highly recommend you to visit this places.

Entry 8:

Moved to Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre, Sandakan. You will see there are many species of Monkeys there.

Officially opened in 1964 to rehabilitate the orphaned baby orang utans or the “Wild Man of Borneo” 11 000 acres of lush equatorial rainforest has been designated as Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve and Sepilok OrangUtan Rehabilitation Centre. It is a pleasant environment for observing the Orang Utan up close in their natural habitat. The best time to view them is during the feeding hours at 10.00am and 3.00pm by the rangers at feeding platform. You can breathe the fresh forest air, walk the wooden plank pathway and marvel at the enormous rainforest trees with the Orang Utans swinging through the vines.

In the wild Orang Utan babies stay with their mothers up to six years while they are taught the skills they need to survive in the forest, you know what? the most important of which is climbing. At Sepilok a buddy system is used to replace a mother's teaching. A younger ape will be paired up with an older one to help them to develop the skills they need.

They name of Orang Utan was derived from the Malay word Orang Hutan which means the "Man of the Forest". OrangUtan is the only ape of Asia and only in Sumatra and Borneo. Though OrangUtans won't give you and eye-roll if you mistakenly call them monkey, people would laugh at you as apes have no tail.

Heyy guys!! Its sounds interesting right? If you arrived at Sepilok, after ticket checkpoint, visitors need to walk about 200 Meters on a raised wooden boardwalk that leads to the OrangUtan feeding platform. The walk takes about 10 minutes, so you better move earlier to be on time to see them.

REMEMBER!!!!!!!
Visitors are not allowed to carry their bag food, drink and insect repellent (poisonous to OrangUtan if they get ahold of it) Orangutans and monkey are highly curious and won't hesitate to rob any object they find alluring. Visitors can store and lock their bags (for free) in locker of visitor building. Still, you must remain vigilant because your smartphone or shiny jewelry could be a target!!!!!!!!!!

Entry 10:

Moved to Sipadan Island, Mabul Island, Kapalai Island!! This is the famous places where people will enjoyed their HOLIDAYS!!
Its located at Semporna Sabah..!! Let's check out!!

When you arrived at Tawau, approximately takes 1 hour and half to arrive at your location. It is because, Tawau is the closest airport to Semporna. Mabul is located southeast of Semporna on the east coast of Sabah, 15km to the north of Pulau Sipadan 15minutes by speedboats. Though physically close to Sipadan, the diving at Mabul Island is completely different. It takes half an hour by speedboat from the closet tow on the mainland. The boats trip takes around 20-30minutes.

Diving trips to Mabul are also arranged by the dive resort on nearby Kapalai Island. If you arrived at night, you may need to overnight in Semporna. There are many Hotel at the Semporna Town, for example Dragon Inn. Dragon Inn is the popular choices as they are within meters of the speedboat departure point. In the other hand, Mabul Island recently had become popular destination for both divers.
